6.2Recurring issues (playbook)

Goal: have a “symptom → causes → actions” playbook for common digital marketing difficulties.
Estimated time: 12 min · If you only have 5 min: read “The essentials in 30s” + the diagram.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Reflex: one symptom = likely causes = an action sequence — diagnose before fixing.
  • Root: a recurring difficulty almost always comes down to the same fundamentals (clear goal, right channels, value before sales, polished conversion, measurement).
  • Order: start with the table's most frequent cause, then check your numbers before applying the rest.

Sofia thread — 1 year on: the playbook pinned in the office

One year on, Sofia keeps this playbook next to her editorial calendar. Verdict: three rows served her most — spreading across too many channels (refocused on two), ads burning budget with no conversion tracking, and a fading social presence (reset on a sustainable calendar). For each, she ended up fixing the root instead of repeating the incident.

Observed symptom, checked causes, actions in order: the reflex holds in three steps.

One reflex per symptom

Most digital marketing troubles recur for classic reasons. Linking each symptom to its likely causes and an action sequence saves precious time — and brings you back to fundamentals.

SymptomLikely causesActions
Lots of activity, but no measurable resultsno clear goal, no KPIs, motion without directionset a SMART goal and 1–2 KPIs per channel; you only manage what you measure (L0.4, L5.2)
Present everywhere but exhausted and invisiblespread across too many channelsfocus on 1–2 channels where the audience is, well run (L0.4, L2.1)
Traffic but very few conversionsunfocused landing, friction, misaligned messagelanding dedicated to ONE goal, proof, single CTA, cut friction (CRO) (L4.3)
SEO won't take offimpatience, no keywords/intent, weak technicalswork the 3 pillars, target real intent, be patient (long-term work) (L1.2)
Ads burn the budgetno conversion tracking, too-broad targeting/keywordsinstall tracking, start small, manage by CAC/ROAS, cut what loses (L4.1, L4.5)
Social presence fades after a good startno calendar, unsustainable paceeditorial calendar, batching, modest but sustained pace (L2.3)
Little engagement despite regular postingbroadcasting without interacting, no valuereply within 24h, spark interaction, deliver value before selling (L2.2, L2.4)
Visitors leave without a traceno way to capture contactlead magnet + simple form + automated nurturing sequence (L4.4, L5.4)
Compliance doubts (cookies, emails)no consent, non opt-in listconsent banner, opt-in, privacy policy, people's rights (L5.5)
Common misinterpretation: “the playbook replaces diagnosis”. No. The table gives likely causes, not a verdict: check your numbers (GA4, KPIs per channel) before applying the action sequence.

“My symptom: [no measurable result / multi-channel exhaustion / budget-burning ads]. My #1 hypothesis: [the playbook's most frequent cause]. I check my numbers then apply the sequence. I review in two weeks.”

Small business / tight budget

No formal table: one symptom, one cause checked on the numbers, one noted fix.

Algeria SME

Include real means (small budget, one person doing everything) in the causes before concluding on a strategy problem.

Remote / hybrid

Add tracking quality to likely causes: at a distance, poorly installed tracking looks like a channel that fails.

Cross-cultural

Check each platform's local uses before acting: correct practice here can fall flat elsewhere.

Caution: The “compliance” row concerns cookies and emailing: consent banners, opt-in and people's rights follow each country's framework (in Europe, GDPR and CNIL guidance). If in doubt about your setups, check them before widening any gap.

Section exit checklist
  • I can link a symptom to its likely causes.
  • I filled in (or scheduled) an express diagnosis sheet.

Sofia spends on advertising but doesn't know what it returns. Which reflex does the playbook apply?

💡

One recurring problem isn't ten incidents: it's a missing fundamental to fix at the root (clear goal, right channels, value before sales, polished conversion, measurement).
