6.1Case studies

Goal: see how the skills from levels 0 to 5 chain together on real cases.
Estimated time: 14 min · If you only have 5 min: read “The essentials in 30s” + the diagram.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Combine: a real case mobilizes the whole chain — assess risks, act with dates, verify effectiveness, standardise what works.
  • Order: understand the shop floor first (visit, DUERP), correct next (CPE before PPE, pilots), prove last (audits, indicators).
  • Reflex: faced with a QHSE situation, replay the levels' sequence in order instead of treating an isolated symptom.

Hakim thread — 1 year on: a safe workshop and a certificate that hold

One year after levels 0 to 5, Hakim re-reads his two landmark files: the 20-person workshop secured in 6 months after 3 accidents in one year, and the ISO 9001 certification earned in 12 months despite rising complaints. Both cases below reuse his sequence: DUERP rebuilt with operators, collective protections first, short rituals, mock audits.

Each case follows Context → Steps → Result: replay it on your site.

Why case studies

The previous levels laid the bricks; here we assemble them end to end. It is the chaining of the right reflexes — assess, act with dates, verify, standardise — that distinguishes a living system from a sleeping binder. Contexts illustrated under French law: transpose to your country.

Case 1 — Workshop of 20 people secured in 6 months

Context: Mechanical SME: 3 accidents/year, 2019 DUERP, PPE not worn, lost customer audit.

Déroulé :

  1. Walk + rebuilt DUERP (work units, S×L ratings, 20 dated actions).
  2. CPE first (guards, extraction), fitted PPE chosen with operators.
  3. Weekly safety quarter-hours + near-miss indicator + quarterly review.
  4. Mock audit, findings closed: customer audit passed, frequency rate halved.

Result: Zero accidents the following year, customer audit passed, a system that runs on its own.

Case 2 — ISO 9001 certification in 12 months

Context: Agri-food SME: rising complaints, paper traceability, markets requiring 9001.

Déroulé :

  1. Pareto of complaints → 2 major causes, 5 whys + pilot PDCA.
  2. 1-page process map + photo work instructions at the workstation + records.
  3. Internal audits + reviews that decide, 5-8 indicators tracked.
  4. Mock audit, close-out, certification: complaints −60%.

Result: Certificate + complaints divided: quality that pays, proven.

Common misinterpretation: "apply the cases to the letter". No. The cases show an order of reflexes (assess, act with dates, verify, standardise), not a rigid script: reuse the order, adapt the content to your site and your local law.

Ready-to-say script — frame your action before acting (1 min)

"Before acting: did I walk the floor with the operators? Is the DUERP up to date and rated? Did I treat the source and the collective before PPE? Which dated action, verified when? I write these five lines first, then I act."

Small business / tight budget

One case at a time, on one page: context in 2 lines, 4 steps, result in 1 sentence.

Algeria SME

Include real constraints (short staffing, peaks, phone/WhatsApp channels) and transpose each duty to local law with the inspectorate or legal counsel.

Remote / hybrid

Double traceability at a distance: written findings and dated photos before acting, shared verification after.

Cross-cultural

Check the country's applicable rules before transposing a case: arrangements compliant here may not be elsewhere.

Caution: Both cases touch people's safety and applicable law: CPE, PPE, DUERP and audits fall under your country's framework (cases illustrated under French law: transpose, don't copy). Validate duties (single document, protections, postings) with the competent inspectorate or legal counsel, and stay within your training for emergencies: secure, alert, bring in trained people.

48h challenge — apply tomorrow

Take 1 real situation from your site and write its 4-step sequence (assess → act with dates → verify → standardise). Test the 1st step this week.

Section exit checklist
  • I can chain the reflexes in the right order on a real case.
  • I have a replayable case sheet for my next situation.
  • I did the 48h challenge or scheduled its date.
Self-rating 1-5: chaining the reflexes?transposition to local law?
