4.4Energy, carbon footprint & sufficiency
The essentials in 30 seconds
- Meter before acting: bills + meters per use (process, compressed air, lighting) and carbon accounting (scopes 1-2-3) — measure wide before acting right.
- Action order: sufficiency (switch off, tune, hunt leaks: free), efficiency (LEDs, drives, insulation: invested, profitable), renewables (the finishing touch).
- Posted steering: monthly board per workshop, energy officer, dated objectives — visible energy becomes manageable.
Threaded mini-case — Hakim and the hissing compressor
Hakim's workshop electricity bill soars and the compressor hisses everywhere. Before any quote, he meters: nearly a third of the bill comes from compressed air, part of it lost to leaks. Anti-leak campaign, pressure switch lowered, night switch-off — then curves posted in the workshop. We will hunt his kilowatt-hours with him.
Continued from cases 4.1-4.3 — Hakim moves from waste to energy.
1. Metering: the assessment before action
Bills and meters per use (process, compressed air, lighting, offices): compressed air and lighting are the classic deposits — lost air leaks account for a notable share of consumption.
Carbon accounting (scopes 1-2-3) for climate: direct, purchased energy, wide indirect — measure wide before acting right, as big items often hide in indirect.
2. Sufficiency, efficiency, renewables: in that order
Sufficiency (switch off, tune, hunt leaks: free), efficiency (LEDs, drives, insulation: invested, profitable), renewables (rooftop solar: the finishing touch).
Reversing the order means generating green what you waste: Hakim plugs leaks before buying any equipment — free before invested.
3. Steering: posted kWh, euros and CO2
Posted monthly board per workshop, appointed energy officer, dated objectives: everyone sees their curve and acts on it.
Visible energy becomes managed energy: a leak heard on a walk (hissing) is worth a report — Hakim trains each workshop head to listen.
🔎 Concrete example — Compressed air recovered (Hakim case)
Free (leaks) before invested (drive).
Metering: compressed air weighs heavy in the bill, leaks audible everywhere.
Actions: anti-leak campaign, pressure switch lowered, night switch-off.
After 3 months: air consumption clearly down, yearly savings.
→ posted in the workshop: the curve motivates.
Result: kilowatt-hours and euros recovered with no investment.
Reflex: listen for leaks on walks (hissing).
Section vocabulary
- Energy sufficiency
- Consuming less by avoiding waste and optimising uses (switching off, tuning, insulating) — the priority, before efficiency.
Simple example: Hakim switches the compressor off at night and hunts leaks.
What it is not: buying new equipment without changing uses.
Reflex: first seek what runs for nothing.
- Energy efficiency
- Consuming better: same service with less energy (high performers, heat recovery, control).
Simple example: LEDs, drive and insulation in Hakim's workshop.
What it is not: reducing the need itself (that is sufficiency).
Reflex: invest only after hunting waste.
- Carbon footprint / GHG assessment
- Activity-related greenhouse-gas emissions, measured by assessment (scopes: direct, energy, indirect) to target action.
Simple example: Hakim finds his purchasing and transport weigh heavy.
What it is not: the electricity bill alone (partial view).
Reflex: measure wide (3 scopes) before prioritising.
- Climate hierarchy
- Action order: reduce first (sufficiency + efficiency), decarbonise next, offset the residual last.
Simple example: Hakim reduces, considers solar, and only offsets after.
What it is not: offsetting first to keep wasting.
Reflex: offsetting never replaces reduction.
- Double energy gain
- Cutting energy and emissions benefits environment (climate) and costs (bills) — a double benefit.
Simple example: Less compressed-air kWh: less CO2 and fewer euros.
What it is not: a purely costly effort with no return.
Reflex: cost euros and CO2 side by side to convince.
In practice — Controlling energy and carbon (Hakim case)
- Cut through sufficiency (switch off, tune, leaks) then efficiency (equipment, control).
- Meter your footprint (GHG assessment, scopes) to target the most emitting items.
- Apply the order: reduce, decarbonise (renewables), offset last and cautiously.
- Combine daily gestures and structural choices — post kWh, euros and CO2.
Ready-to-say script — launching the leak hunt (1 min)
“This week, we hunt lost air: everyone reports hissing, we tighten and repair. The compressor stops at night and the pressure switch drops one notch. I read the meters every Friday and post the curve here — together we will see what free brings.”
Say it in the workshop: free gestures, weekly reading, posted curve.
Copy-paste template — monthly energy board
MONTH: _______________ / WORKSHOP: _______________
KWH PER USE (process, air, lighting): _______________
BILL (€): _______________ / ESTIMATED CO2: _______________
DRIFT / LEAK SPOTTED: _______________
ACTION (sober / efficient) + WHO + WHEN: _______________
Small workshop
One meter and one weekly reading are enough: Hakim posts the curve on the room door.
Offices
Lighting, AC and standbys: scheduled switch-off and temperature instruction — no compressor.
Fleet and travel
Fuel tracked per vehicle, eco-driving, optimised rounds: energy also rolls.
Towards renewables
After sufficiency and efficiency only: study rooftop solar on metered figures.
✓ Best practices
- Fit meters per use: visible energy becomes manageable.
- Act sober then efficient, renewables last.
- Post kWh, euros and CO2 with an appointed officer.
✗ Common pitfalls
- Investing in green before hunting waste.
- Settling for the overall bill (blind to uses).
- Setting objectives with no measure and no tracking.
Key takeaways
- Sufficiency (less) first, efficiency (better) next: double environment and cost gain.
- Metering the footprint (GHG assessment, scopes) to act on big items.
- Order: reduce, decarbonise, offset last and cautiously.
- Climate, economic and increasingly regulatory stakes; daily gestures + structural choices.
48h challenge — apply it tomorrow
Do a listening round (air leaks, useless lights, standbys) in 1 room, note 3 free bits of waste to fix and read 1 meter.
- I can tell sufficiency from efficiency with one example each.
- I can name the reduce-decarbonise-offset order.
- I have hunted (or planned) 3 free bits of waste in 1 room.
Frequently asked questions
Sufficiency or efficiency: where do you start?
With sufficiency: switching off, tuning, avoiding waste — free and immediate, it questions the need. Efficiency (same service, less energy) then completes with equipment and control. One cuts use, the other optimises yield.
Should you offset your emissions?
Last only, after cutting: offsetting funds projects elsewhere but neither erases your emissions nor is free of greenwashing risks. First meter, reduce and decarbonise — offsetting only handles the residual, cautiously.
