5.3AutoCAD Electrical & electrical schematics
The AutoCAD Electrical toolset is designed for industrial electrical schematics. It brings libraries of standardized symbols (contacts, relays, motors, terminal blocks…), automatic referencing of wires and components, intelligent numbering, and the automatic generation of BOMs, cable lists and terminal block lists.
Its real power is the intelligence of the schematics: wires and components are linked, cross-references (coil/contacts) are kept up to date, a modification propagates. You produce coherent and compliant electrical documents much faster than with manual drawing. For an automation or electrical engineer, this toolset transforms productivity and makes studies more reliable.
Section vocabulary
- AutoCAD Electrical
- Toolset specialized in industrial electrical schematics (symbols, referencing, BOMs).
- Standardized electrical symbol
- Standard representation of a component (contact, relay, motor…) from the libraries.
- Wire referencing
- Automatic numbering/identification of the wires and conductors of the schematic.
- Cross-reference
- Automatic link between related elements (e.g. a coil and its contacts), updated together.
- Cable / terminal block list
- Documents automatically generated from the intelligent schematic.
What is AutoCAD Electrical designed for?
In practice — Discovering electrical schematics
- In AutoCAD Electrical, insert standardized symbols from the libraries (contacts, relays, motor).
- Draw wires and let the referencing/numbering happen automatically.
- Create a cross-reference (coil ↔ contacts) and check its update.
- Generate a BOM and a wire/terminal block list from the schematic.
Key points to remember
- AutoCAD Electrical is dedicated to industrial electrical schematics.
- Libraries of standardized symbols + automatic wire referencing.
- Intelligent cross-references (coil/contacts) kept up to date.
- BOMs, cable lists and terminal block lists generated automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make electrical schematics with standard AutoCAD?
Technically yes, by drawing everything manually, but you lose all the benefit of automation. AutoCAD Electrical brings the intelligence: automatic referencing, cross-references, linked BOMs, error detection. A somewhat substantial schematic is much longer, riskier and less consistent to produce in basic AutoCAD. For regular electrical engineering, the dedicated toolset is an investment quickly paid back.
Is AutoCAD Electrical suitable for building electrical work?
It is mainly designed for industrial electrical engineering and automation (control/power schematics, panels). For building electrical work (layout plans, power/weak currents on an architectural plan), other approaches or specialized software are often used, sometimes combined with the DWG plan. Identify your field well: Electrical excels at industrial schematics, less at building layout.
