0.1What is AutoCAD and what is it used for?
AutoCAD, published by Autodesk since 1982, is the most widely used CAD (Computer-Aided Drafting) software in the world. It is used to produce precise technical drawings: 2D plans, dimensioned layouts and 3D modeling. It is found in almost every technical field — building, mechanical, electrical, civil engineering, cartography.
Its strength: thousandth-of-a-unit precision and a universal format, DWG, which has become an exchange standard. AutoCAD exists in a "generalist" version and specialized toolsets (Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, Map 3D…) included in the subscription. This guide takes you from the very first drawings to 3D, automation and specialized trades.
Section vocabulary
- AutoCAD
- CAD software from Autodesk for precise 2D and 3D technical drafting. World standard since 1982.
- CAD
- CAD: Computer-Aided Drafting (the drawing). CAE: Computer-Aided Engineering (design + calculations).
- DWG
- Native AutoCAD file format, now a universal standard for exchanging technical drawings.
- Toolset
- Specialized version included in the subscription: Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, Map 3D, Plant 3D…
- Technical drawing
- Standardized and dimensioned representation of an object or structure, used for manufacturing or construction.
What is AutoCAD and what is its native format?
In practice — Placing AutoCAD and its use
- Identify the field you work in (building, mechanical, electrical, topography…) and the type of drawings produced.
- Note the difference between a 2D plan (views, sections) and a 3D model: which one does your activity target?
- Note the importance of the DWG format: your exchanges with clients/design offices will rely on it.
- Identify the specialized toolsets that could help you (level 5): Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, Map 3D.
Key points to remember
- AutoCAD is the world standard for CAD (2D and 3D technical drawing).
- The DWG format is a universal exchange standard.
- It covers building, mechanical, electrical, civil engineering, cartography…
- Specialized toolsets are included in the subscription.
Frequently asked questions
Is AutoCAD for 2D or 3D?
Both, but it remains above all the reference for 2D technical drawing (plans, sections, dimensioned layouts). It also has a 3D module (solids, surfaces) covered at level 4, useful in many cases. For advanced parametric 3D modeling (mechanical, BIM), dedicated software like Inventor or Revit — also from Autodesk — is often preferred.
Do I have to pay for AutoCAD to learn?
Not necessarily to get started: Autodesk offers a free student/education version (for students and teachers), as well as a trial period. AutoCAD is also professional subscription-based software. Section 0-2 details installation and license options, including the education version.
