Capstone Project — Build and Deploy a Complete REST API, from A to Z
- Goal: design a real REST API (e.g. a task app, mini social network, management system) and take it to production: MVC structure, database persistence, secure authentication, optional real-time, validated by tests, then deployed and automated.
- Material: the Node.js cheat sheet below (reflexes, concepts, watch points) to keep at hand.
- Method: one stage per level. Get your environment set up, consolidate JavaScript and Node basics, master Node core, build the API with Express and a database, add structured API/auth/real-time, then professionalize (TypeScript, performance, Docker) and deploy.

Stage 0 · Level 0 — Getting started (L0)
Install Node (LTS) + VS Code, master the terminal and REPL. Understand Node's model (non-blocking async, event loop) and its domain (I/O, web).
Stage 1 · Level 1 — Consolidate JS & Node basics (L1)
Solidify modern JavaScript (const/let, async/await, destructuring, map/filter/reduce). Organize into modules. Initialize an npm project (package.json, dependencies, scripts, .gitignore).
Stage 2 · Level 2 — Master Node core (L2)
Use native modules (async fs, path, os), event-driven programming (EventEmitter), streams for large volumes. Create a native HTTP server to understand the foundation before Express.
Stage 3 · Level 3 — Build with Express & a database (L3)
Build the app with Express (routing, req/res, MIDDLEWARES). Choose and connect a database (MongoDB/Mongoose or SQL/Prisma), define validated schemas, implement CRUD.
Stage 4 · Level 4 — API, auth & real-time (L4)
Structure a complete REST API (MVC, resources, HTTP methods/codes). Secure authentication (bcrypt, JWT, authorization, Helmet). Add real-time if relevant (Socket.IO). Make it robust: validation (Zod/Joi), error handling, tests (Jest).
Stage 5 · Level 5 — Professionalize & deploy (L5)
Add types with TypeScript for robustness. Optimize (clustering, caching, profiling — without premature optimization). Containerize with Docker (+ Compose). Deploy (Render/Railway or VPS), manage env variables/HTTPS, and automate with CI/CD (GitHub Actions).
Success criteria
- Real hands-on setup: working environment (Node LTS, VS Code, terminal, REPL), Node model understood (non-blocking async), well-managed npm project (package.json, .gitignore).
- Solid foundation: fluent modern JavaScript (incl. async/await), code organized into modules, use of native modules and understanding of the HTTP server beneath Express.
- Well-designed REST API: MVC structure, correct resources and HTTP methods/codes, database with validated schemas and CRUD, secure authentication (hashed passwords, JWT, authorization), and robustness (validation, error handling, tests).
- Professional production deployment: robust code (ideally typed with TypeScript), containerized (Docker), deployed and accessible online (HTTPS, secrets in env variables), with a CI/CD pipeline — the full cycle from idea to reliable online service.
