Capstone Project — Design a Library of Professional Diagrams for an Organization, From A to Z
- Objective: build a coherent set of diagrams useful to an organization — an org chart (ideally data-linked), a process map (flowchart/swimlanes), a network diagram or floor plan, with data-linked diagrams (visual dashboard), all collaborative, standardized and following best practices.
- Materials: the Visio cheat sheet below (interface, shapes, connectors, data linking, best practices) to keep at hand.
- Method: one stage per level. Get to grips with the environment, build your first diagrams, produce everyday diagrams (org chart, flowchart), then business diagrams (network, floor plan, process), link diagrams to data (dashboard), and finally collaborate, integrate and standardize.

Stage 0 · Level 0 — Getting Started (L0)
Check your Visio version/license (web or desktop), explore the interface (templates, stencils, Shapes pane), and create/save (.vsdx) a first diagram — knowing how to export it (PDF, image).
Stage 1 · Level 1 — First Diagrams (L1)
Build diagrams from templates: drop shapes, connect them with SMART connectors, add concise text, apply a THEME (consistency), and manage pages/page setup/printing.
Stage 2 · Level 2 — Everyday Diagrams (L2)
Produce an ORG CHART (by hand or via the wizard/Excel data) and a FLOWCHART (standardized symbols, labeled decisions); organize neatly (align, distribute, group, containers, layers).
Stage 3 · Level 3 — Business Diagrams (L3)
Build a business diagram: a PROCESS map (swimlanes/BPMN), a NETWORK diagram (standardized icons, annotations) or a layout FLOOR PLAN (scaled) — per your context.
Stage 4 · Level 4 — Data-Linked Diagrams (L4)
LINK shapes to data (Excel/database), DISPLAY it visually (data graphics: colors, icons, bars → dashboard), use SHAPE DATA, REFRESH and generate a report; validate process diagrams.
Stage 5 · Level 5 — Collaborate, Integrate, Standardize (L5)
Collaborate (Visio for the web, co-authoring, comments, Teams), INTEGRATE diagrams (Word, PowerPoint, Power BI), build COMPANY stencils/templates (standardization), and apply BEST PRACTICES (clarity, consistency, audience fit).
Success Criteria
- Real hands-on grounding: Visio environment understood (version/license, interface, stencils), diagrams created and saved (.vsdx), exportable (PDF, image).
- Everyday diagrams mastered: an org chart (ideally generated/data-linked) and a flowchart following STANDARDIZED symbols (labeled decisions), with neat placement (aligned, distributed, organized) and coherent dressing (theme).
- A business diagram and a DATA-LINKED diagram: a network diagram, a scaled floor plan or a process map (swimlanes/BPMN); and a diagram whose shapes carry and DISPLAY data (data graphics → visual dashboard), refreshable.
- Collaborative, integrated, professional work: shared/co-authored diagrams (cloud, comments), embedded in deliverables (Word/PowerPoint/Power BI), standardized (company stencils/templates) and following VISUAL COMMUNICATION best practices (clarity, consistency, audience fit) — the full cycle, from first steps to communicating diagrams.
