Lab project: a complete project: produce an organization's typical reports (list, invoice/statement, grouped management report, cross-tab, dashboard), interactive (parameters), accurate, performant and distributed

Lab project — Design and distribute a library of professional reports, from connection to distribution

⬇️ Download the Crystal Reports cheat sheet (TXT)

Step 0 · Level 0 — Getting started & connection (N0)

Install the designer (free trial), understand the logic of SECTIONS (where/how many times), connect to a source and LINK the tables (joins — crucial step).

Step 1 · Level 1 — First report (N1)

Create a report with the wizard: choose the right tables, place the fields in the sections (data → Details), format (number/date format), add a title, special fields ("Page N of M") and check the preview.

Step 2 · Level 2 — Organize, filter, parameterize (N2)

Sort and GROUP (by customer/month), add SUBTOTALS (Group Footer) and a grand total, filter SERVER-SIDE, make the report interactive with PARAMETERS, and master the sections (summary/detail, pagination).

Step 3 · Level 3 — Formulas & conditional formatting (N3)

Create FORMULAS (calculations, categories via If/Select), apply CONDITIONAL FORMATTING (negatives in red, thresholds), add running totals (running balance) and advanced groups (Top N, sort by group).

Step 4 · Level 4 — Expert functions (N4)

Add a SUBREPORT (related/multi-source data — at a group level for performance), a CHART (right type), a CROSS-TAB (dimension with few values in columns); use an SQL command if needed, alerts/drill-down.

Step 5 · Level 5 — Distribute & make reliable (N5)

EXPORT in the right format (PDF to read, Excel "data only" to analyze), add DYNAMIC/cascading parameters, consider application integration, and above all OPTIMIZE (server-side) and VERIFY accuracy (joins, cross-checked totals) before distributing.
